Badbury Rings

Badbury Rings
Just a mile from Kingston Lacy, towards Blandford is Badbury Rings ~ Rich in history, flora and fauna, the rings sit 100 metres above sea level and offer sweeping views across Dorset. They also hold the secrets of past civilisations. There is evidence of Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman occupation at Badbury. However, the site is known mostly for its Iron Age hill fort with its three rings. It is thought the inner most ring dates from around 500 -600 BC. A number of tribes settled at Badbury Rings. Among them were the Durotriges – a Celtic tribe who lived in parts of the South West of England prior to the Roman occupation of 43 AD.

A beautiful series. I like the figures giving a sense of scale and the light is lovely. I think my favourite is the one taken through the trees with the figures against the distant view. Your hill forts are so large in comparison to ones in Scotland. There must always have been quite a difference in population.

You are probably correct in saying always a difference in population Jean. This is another N.T maintained place, but it is free to walk around. The membership ticket came in handy though, as it does charge for parking if not a member. Thank you for your kind comments. I think I like the middle pic best as well :)

The gripe in Falkland is that there is no NT parking for the palace and the High street is constantly cluttered up with coaches etc. as it's a very popular property. It must be one of the few NT places without parking.

I have the same problem with a couple of their sites in this area Jean. One being The Courts Garden, Holt. They don't get many coaches but lots of cars in the village.

A splendid series Rosa.............it looks like you had some good weather for the walk. The sunshine is lovely and has brought out the subtle colours in the landscape, especially in the second PiP.

I love all three images, but my favourite (with Jean) has to be the first PiP. The view is perfectly framed by the almost silhouetted trees and the light on the lush green fields is gorgeous.

I think maybe I should have made the first PiP my main picture Keith...it is my favourite as well, but the one I did choose was my first sighting of this historic landscape. Very popular with dog walkers.

Thank you for all your generous comments.

Wonderful views from the top, I wonder what it would have looked like at the time of the hill fort
I agree the first PIP is the best one

Sites like this are a;ways worth exploring. They don't look like much but the history is fascinating. Have you visited Grimes graves in Norfolk?

Three wonderful photos with lovely autumnal colours. As others have said, the first PiP with its tree frame and the people for scale is outstanding.

Thank you very much Gudrun. Sounds like the first PiP is the preferred picture :)

An impressive place you have presented here in this excellent collection Rosa. My fav is the third PiP with the path leading off into the picture under the band of dark clouds. Thanks for the interesting notes.
