London - a small bit of a larger artwork 20

London - a small bit of a larger artwork 20
1/8th of the full painting.

The closer I got to the painting, the more realistic the bas relief appeared to be. How do they do that?

One last one to guess the painter, if you are so inclined. Yes, it's in The National Gallery.

Berny, Jean Paul Capdeville, xenophora, Kalli and 36 other people have particularly liked this photo

So often when you get close to a painting it becomes less realistic - this was just the opposite!

Thanks. Glad you think so. It amazes me how there can be a whole painting's worth of detail in a small piece of a painting.

I was in shock at the realism. One looked at the whole painting and then the cat caught my eye and I was amazed.

I didn't actually like to look at the main subject of the painting (though painted well), then I saw this and couldn't look away.

Your image is so much better than the one on the National Gallery's website. Interestingly, it was once owned by Sir Robert Peel. The website also says it's not currently on display, so you must have seen it the last time they brought it out.

You are very kind. I often photograph bits of paintings that draw my eye - not unlike how I photograph in general, finding the small part of something that intrigues me.

I was there in the summer of 2022. The tag didn't mention Sir Robert Peel, but it does day the museum bought the painting in 1871 - so after Peel passed away.

I cannot guess the painter, but the details are, indeed, mesmerising! How do they do it?

raingirl club has replied to Diana Australis club
I was in shock standing at that painting - it is incredible what they accomplished. And this only a small detail (the best part, in my opinion).

It's a painter I had never heard of, Willem van Mieris. Painted in 1713. Current realist painters would do so well to do as good.

Interestingly, I'm not that fond of the whole painting. But here is a link to see it whole: www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/willem-van-mieris-a-woman-and-a-fish-pedlar-in-a-kitchen

Herzlichen Dank, liebe Laura!
