So often when you get close to a painting it becomes less realistic - this was just the opposite!

I was in shock at the realism. One looked at the whole painting and then the cat caught my eye and I was amazed.

Your image is so much better than the one on the National Gallery's website. Interestingly, it was once owned by Sir Robert Peel. The website also says it's not currently on display, so you must have seen it the last time they brought it out.

You are very kind. I often photograph bits of paintings that draw my eye - not unlike how I photograph in general, finding the small part of something that intrigues me.

I was there in the summer of 2022. The tag didn't mention Sir Robert Peel, but it does day the museum bought the painting in 1871 - so after Peel passed away.

I cannot guess the painter, but the details are, indeed, mesmerising! How do they do it?

I was in shock standing at that painting - it is incredible what they accomplished. And this only a small detail (the best part, in my opinion).

It's a painter I had never heard of, Willem van Mieris. Painted in 1713. Current realist painters would do so well to do as good.

Oh, I took a snapshot of the whole painting, but it was this detail that I thought worth sharing. I think the whole painting is amazing, but not what I needed in my photos - haha.

Dieses Detail erzählt sicherlich eine ganze Geschichte, Laura! Dazu muss man wirklich nicht mehr sehen. Trotzdem wäre es schön, wenn du das ganze Bild zumindest in einem PiP hinzufügen könntest. Es ist einfach die Neugier – schöne Grüße!

Herzlichen Dank, liebe Laura! Ja, es ist die „feine Malerei“ der Niederländer aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Willem van Mieris war mir bisher nicht bekannt.
Ich denke, du hättest viele Ausschnitte wählen können, allein das Gesicht des Fischhändlers wäre es wert.
Auch wenn ich es bezahlen könnte, aufhängen würde ich mir das Bild in meiner Wohnung auch nicht, aber äußerst interessant finde ich es wohl. Bei solch realistischen und detailreichen, aber zugleich fantasievollen Bildern frage ich mich immer, wie viel Wochen oder gar Monate der Maler dazu gebraucht hat.

I wonder also. Must be a very long time, I would think.

I remember this from the National Gallery. Love that place and could spend days there, but other family members aren't quite as interested.

We spent a good long time there (but all on one day - so couldn't see everything), but still I had to photograph along the way beecause others wanted to go faster than me.

I was so taken with all the details in so many of the paintings. I wonder how one could make a photograph that had as much interest. I suppose Annie Liebovitz does it somewhat.

The details of artwork are always fascinating. Maybe the cat depicts the desire for the meal...

Ah yes - hunger is a great motivator.
