driving portland - the smoke is gone

The fires themselves came within about 15 miles. The largest most dangerous ones about 30 miles. My mother's house was almost put on the 'prepare to evacuate' zone, but it came within 3 miles of her, then they managed to back that off.

As of today the closest one is now 20% contained. That doesn't sound like much, but it actually is a really good thing and major improvement. We continue to have damp weather which is helping, with more rain expected in a few days.

Breathe it while you can Laura, Fresh air is not abundant anymore you have to ask yourself where did all that smoke go?

We are monitoring the air quality each day as the fires are still not out. The largest one and current closest to us (30 miles) is 20% contained as of today. That is a really good sign, but it is so huge, it still is a problem.

We had gotten close to the 600 mark in air quality (way way into the hazardous to breath zone), and today we are at 15. So I am definitely breathing deep today!!

The smoke went lots of places, onto our ground, into our homes, but the bulk of it slid up and over the States, and on to Europe. You may have even caught a pink looking sun where you are. It takes a very long time for the smoke to disapate - like when there's a volcano.

you noticed my car's cute feature! i actually love it - older eyes are slower to shift focus, so having my car speed reflected on the windshield is cool. i can turn it off and when i first got the car i thought it would annoy me, but i chose to keep it on. and hey, now i can prove i wasn't speeding over the bridge!! ha!

You are so lucky! It was not fun at all. But now our air is better than it's been in quite a long time. Go figure.

I'm so glad it's cleared up there. There's nothing quite like seeing smoke everywhere and you realize all you have left is the breathable air that's in your house. It's so scary. I'm so glad you didn't have to evactuate.

I started thinking about the possibility of evacuating. I had to stop. We've been in our home for 23 years. Before that we were in an apartment for 12. I know I should know what to take, but sometimes it feels like everything or nothing (except my husband of course - ha!).

You had a very tough situation there. I'm glad that it is improving. We caught some of the high level smoke on the east coast, resulting in gray-blue skies.

Yes, we've managed to pollute a large portion of the earth. Our fires are finally getting under control. Sadly the California fires are still not great, but I think everything is going in the right direction.

We love our bridges here in Portland. There's 12 in only 12 miles of river, and 8 of those are in just a 3 mile stretch.
