This is a super looking pocket watch - originally owned by someone well off I would imagine. The delicate design of the face is amazing as well as the design of the watch case and the "tassel" at the end of the chain. I would imagine that your granddaughter would really love it, if it's working.

It's a great find and beautifully photographed! Most things today look so cheap compared to older ones- I do hope you can get it cleaned and restored!

Ein wirklich besonderes Stück und ja, die Details sind aussergewöhnlich...so eine sieht man nicht oft..die Blumen, der Schlüssel dazu und dann noch die metallene Quaste an der Kette...so filigran..wunderschön!!

It's beautiful Keith. You would be very lucky to get anything like this in a charity shop now. What a lovely family heirloom it would make if you were to pass it on to your granddaughter! I have seen similar sold on Flog it for a pretty penny! It looks like a Chatelaine watch the may have been hung from the waist. If you are able to find out more about it, we would love to know :-))

Glad you like the photo Rosa........and thanks for the information. It is indeed a Chatelaine watch and I think it was Swiss made sometime between the mid 1880s and early 1900s. It's not actually sterling silver but it is marked "800" which is just below sterling standard (925 of course).

We went to Chichester today and tried about six shops who advertised watch servicing and repairs and none of them would take it on saying it was too specialised, spares wouldn't be available and the cost would be too great (one suggested over £200 and another around £400)..!!

I shall have to go online and have a look in a couple of the antique watch forums to see if I can find someone. The movement seems to be working(ish) but the hands don't move.

It may be a lost cause, but I won't give up just yet!
