Down Train,

Down Train,
Running down from the shed and passing the water tower to reverse onto its train at Platform 2, Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway, This locomotive has been converted from a 2-6-2 tank engine and has proved to be an admirable performer and very well suited to the line.

Traktor 49, Maria Lovasz, J. Gafarot, SV1XV and 53 other people have particularly liked this photo

It has a poetic sense of yesterday, alive.
The older I get the better I love and like the past tense.

On the New South Wales Govt Railway in Australia which I grew up with turning tank into tender and tender into tank was a thing. The most numerous was a 4-6-4 tank from 1903 where after Sydney suburban electrification from the mid 1920s 77 of the 145 locos were converted to tender type known as the 30T. Some were superheated and had their smoke box extended. These became the mainstay of branchline locos until displaced by diseasals in the 1960s.

The conversion was frowned upon by railway preservation purists however it was a class on the drawing board when the building of steam locomotives ceased, It is a very popular engine with the staff has proved to be a good workhorse,
