It's great that his old pier will be restored. Perhaps it's possible to access the island by a natural causeway at low tide? HBM Roger.

The area has very fast flowing water and tides up to 15m therefore a causeway may be dangerous.

Quite a lot of restoration work needed it seems! A fine image with plenty of detail viewed large. Happy Bench Monday and have a good week, Roger.

Another fine capture here with the pier too. - Its great that the go-ahead has been given for the restoration but the fact that the monies are coming from the 'levelling-up-find' worries me somewhat. I shall try to see what happens here (with your help maybe) and keep my fingers crossed.

It's taken a long time to get this started................but better late than never I suppose. It's a huge job and the location will make it very difficult. This will be interesting to follow.

Very, very pleased that Finally something like real progress may happen with the restoration of Birnbeck Island, Piers and the Lifeboat Station. It has been a long time in gestation.

Just hope that *they" don't over-do the "new" development - sadly some of the modern RNLI stations don't blend in too well with their historic settings.

Both the pier and island are grade two listed buildings, so hopefully that will keep a check on the more outlandish designs. As an extra safeguard Historic England are also a part of the project!

I am glad to see Birnbeck is on the way to recovery.
I put this note on another view of it some time ago -
'When I was a social work student, I had clients who lived on this pier. They had run the cafe and lived above it until one lost the use of his legs. They were living in the steamer booking office. I tried to get them rehoused, but they had to return to their former local authority area in Wales, as they hadn't been in WSM long enough. Once I got stuck there when the sea was a bit choppy at high tide. I had to stay there for a couple of extra hours.'
I can also remember having a trip on a P&A Campbell steamer over to Barry from there, in even earlier years.

I also remember the steamer trips and many visits to the pier when in its prime, in later years ye the theatre became a bierkeller with the usual raucous evenings.
The whole restoration project is led by the RNLI who have an urgent need to reuse it as a base.

Weird...I've just been reading about Birnbeck Island...much taken by the photos of it's former glory and it's popularity, thanks for the link Roger, glad to see that it may 'rise again'
