Dundas Street, London, Ontario

Dundas Street runs about 200 km from Toronto to London, Ontario. This view is about 400 m from the western end of those 200 km. Just below the centre of the photo is a PiP showing the view of that part of the window I posted a few days ago. Toronto has decided to rename its part of Dundas Street, since it was named after Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville. who delayed the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. I wonder if they will consult London about the new name. London was, after all, a terminus of the Underground Railroad. I'm joking -- of course they won't consult London.

Pool of London

The Pool of London was an important part of London's economy from the 7th century to the mid-20th, when the shipping trade moved to container ports on the coast. This postcard is probably from the 1930s; another card in the series shows a number of buses, none dating from later than the early Thirties Submitted to the Vintage Photos Them Park for the "Iconic Landmark/Tourist Destination" theme.

Market Square, London, Ontario

Guess what -- the market in London, Ontario is called Covent Garden. The iron trees here are part of an installation of 60 metal trees by Bill Hodgson called "Metal Trees of the Carolinian Forest"; the trees were installed around downtown between 2007 and 2009. Many objections were raised by members of the public, the chief one being that since London already had over 120,000 real trees of the Carolinian forest, adding metal ones seemed like a work of supererogation. But eventually four times as many as had been planned were installed. The yellow tree on the left is a trembling aspen, the green tree in the middle is a white pine, and the blue one on the right is a white oak. The size of your oak and aspen leaves may vary. I have always been part of the school that thought planting real trees would have been better, but this corner is engrossing. I also took some photos of the trees with traffic lights that I find quite interesting and may post them eventually. London has another installation on a sylvan theme -- one of carved tree trunks. I hope to get round to them. LOOK AT 'ER BIG, EH? (type Z) Thanks to CoolHead of the Looking around London blog for most of the information here about the metal trees.

WAMBO 2014

The Wallaceburg (Ontario) Antique Motor and Boat Outing, 2014. If you want to see old motors and boats, this is the place. Cars, trucks, fire trucks, tractors, speedboats, yachts, houseboats. The year this was taken, they had Miss Supertest III, three-time winner of the Harmsworth Cup. It's usually held on this long weekend in August, but they're still debating whether to hold one this year; it would be held in September. Last year's was cancelled. If you ever get the opportunity to go, go. Check to see if the Old Autos show in nearby Bothwell is on the same day. You can start at Wambo, then go to Bothwell for the 50/50 draw, and then if you still have vehicles to see in Wallaceburg head back. I prefer the larger views here. Type Z to see what you think.

We're having a long weekend, and it's corn season, so yesterday everyone was out buying corn. Well, not everyone -- someone seems to be taking their boat to either Lake Erie or Lake Huron (this was taken in Komoka, Ontario, which is a short drive from both). I recommend the large view (type Z).

We're now loosening the restrictions here after our third wave and perhaps, as some people suggest, kicking off the fourth. All but one of the people here are in a family group, so things aren't quite as bad as they look. This is Wortley Village in London, Ontario.

Try 'er big: type Z. ===== There is another view from the same night in the PiP at upper left. Since this was taken a maple leaf has been added after the final O and a representation of a medicine wheel has been added before the initial T.
