Hamilton AFB amphitheatre (#0020)

Hamilton AFB amphitheatre (#0020)
Near the center of the base, a sizable amphitheater built into the hillside. I could find no history regarding its construction, but considering the age of the base and the style of construction, I suspect this was built with New Deal funds.

Apologies for the quality of the pictures of the amphitheater – it faces east and the sun was somewhat low in the west, thus the amphitheater was either in shadows or bright sun.

Wait...the Romans were in Marin county? That's an unusual item for an air base, I'd think, but it's quite attractive. I wonder if it's ever used.

I was surprised by how they had constructed it. The 'aisles' look too narrow for them to have used some sort of portable chair, and the rise between aisles was also surprisingly low.

It didn't look to have any use in the past few years. The military has lots of 'formations' for ceremonial purposes, and they often put on shows 'for the troops', so it might well have been used.
