Las Vegas (west), NM Plaza Hotel (# 1071)
The Plaza Hotel in west Las Vegas. Built in 1882 as an upscale hotel, its status as the leading hotel of that era was short, lasting only until the Santa Fe railroad opened the Castañeda in east Las Vegas near the depot (see # 1051). For much of the 20th century the hotel had a rather mixed history (see the Wikipedia), including being owned from 1913 to 1915 by a silent film director and being renamed the Hotel Romaine – a shadow of the Romaine sign can be seen in a wall on the left. In the 1980’s the hotel was refurbished and returned to being a desirable dining and accommodation destination. The tall building on the right side of the hotel was a department store that opened in 1883, it has since been converted into being an extension of the hotel.
