Oregon City Williamette Falls paper mill (#0167)

Wonderful shot, love the mossy roofs. You haven't lived until you've smelled a paper mill. And a beet sugar processing plant. Both shockingly nasty!

When I was a child, a big industry in Jacksonville was a paper mill. The mill was 8 miles away (straight line distance) from my home, but its odor was a constant presence. Some European companies stopped using Jacksonville as a port because the emissions damaged paint on their cars.

Wow, that's telling, isn't it? Can we assume it damages skin and lungs, too? ;-/

There's also the point on this picture (see description) that the steel bridge had a special coating due to the corrosive effects of the emissions: Oregon City bridge (#0173)

Sulfur dioxide is used in preserving fruit (particularly apricots), but is also described as toxic for humans. I searched around and found statements that high levels are damaging to health, but had no way of knowing if the level of emissions from such plants were considered high.

Everett, WA used to be notorious for the reek from the mill!
