These pictures are based on a general exploration of the Portland area when I was there for the Pacific Sociological Association meetings from 2005 thru 2016 -- the meetings are in early April. The city is an easy and pleasant place to visit. The downtown area is quite walkable with relatively narrow streets and not a lot of traffic -- and there is excellent transit service. Portland light rail leaving Skidmore Fountain in Oldtown. This is an airport trolley, which provided good service to and from the airport. A 2 hour transit pass ($2.05 in 2008) was enough to get from the airport to city center and then a bus to my hotel.

The home of the Oregon Symphony. The red ball under the marquee was an inflatable ball that was part of an art project touring Portland in 2005 -- it was in that location just for that one day.

The older building on the left side of the picture was abandoned. It appeared that many of the condos were being built where there had been similar factories or warehouses. On the other side of buildings is the Williamette river (see other pictures in set)

The train nearest is the Amtrak Cascades that runs from Eugene, OR to Vancouver, BC. On the lower right you can see an Amtrak engine which was for either the Coast Starlight or the Empire Builder.

Just north of old town is Union Station, which was quite busy on a Sunday afternoon.

A good view of how much condo construction was occurring in the area. In the area adjacent to the station there were very many multi-story condo or apartment buildings under construction in April 2008
