The boats are commonly referred to as 'narrow boats' due to their width of 7' that was determined by the width of the locks and canals. Just about all narrow boats now are used as homes or for recreation (including restaurants). Historically, though, narrowboats had very small living quarters and the majority of the boat was for carrying cargo.
