Maps and the official publications list a large area adjacent to downtown Birmingham as 'gay village'. Tourist brochures describe the area as a lively gay center, but I was in Birmingham from Sunday through Tuesday and when I visited the area, there were no people out and about. It seems to be a night area, didn't find any restaurants or shops.

That is odd. You'd think there would be some life going on, not to mention coffee bars, at the very least. But, they've got Dame Edna posters, so that's a start!

In a couple of 'gay' areas in Europe I've encountered the same thing. We expect at least a local neighborhood restaurant or coffee shop that's active during the day, but that just doesn't seem to happen over there.
