Continuing the contradictions to my 30+ year old memories of the Clear Lake area, I was surprised by the rolling hills, almost Mediterranean looking landscape, and the extent of middle-income style residential and vacation homes. This is taken from Lucerne, which is north of Clearlake.

It's disconcerting how so often one's vague memories of a place decades before don't fit with current experience! Why historians distrust reminiscences and prefer contemporary accounts-- ;)

My memories are bizarrely different. I think the problem is that I vaguely remember coming to the area from the I-5 and so have always assumed I was seeing the east side of the lake, but that in fact I came into from the 101 and am remembering the west side.
