Aboard northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner in area of Point Conception.

The scenery was wonderful, though the window reflection makes it difficult to photograph. As far as I could find out, much of the area that the train passes through is not accessible to the general public.

Maps have always suggested to me that much of this area is military. Is that the case?

Much of this is Vandenberg Air Force base, which includes the prime missile test site facility on the west coast, and is thus inaccessible to civilians except those passing through on the train. There were security officers walking through the train as we passed through. www.vandenberg.af.mil Much of the rest is very large, very private, ranches.
