Shafter is largely a ghost town but with a few inhabitants. Unlike ghost towns in other parts of the west, everything here was fenced off and clearly marked "No Trespassing"
Update 2/14/2016: I now know why this was such a secretive ghost town. A resort built near here was an exclusive retreat for political elite, and was where Justice Scalia died: www.nytimes.com/2016/02/14/us/texas-ranch-where-scalia-died-is-rugged-oasis-for-the-famous.html
