Berlin Persecuted Homosexuals Memorial (#2126)

Berlin Persecuted Homosexuals Memorial (#2126)
The description of the "Memorial to the Homosexuals Persecuted under the National Socialist Regime" and of the long persecution of homosexual not only by the Nazis but even continuing after the war.

I was impressed that the city chose to officially recognize the Nazi persecution of homosexuals and to provide a memorial space in Tiergarten, but as was the case with many of the Nazi-related sites that I visited, there was a level of tourist traffic that made it difficult to experience the site and left the site looking traffic-worn.

Note that this placard is roughly 20 feet from the memorial, roughly the distance seen in #2125.

That New Yorker article was pretty accurate re early 1900's and Germany's role in sexuality research, and many consider Germany, and particularly Berlin, to be leaders again. Comparatively, many cities in the U.S. now have fairly positive, public, ways of acknowledging gays, but it is frustrating that few (if any) governments in the U.S. acknowledge their past history in suppressing homosexuality through imprisonment and forced treatments.

Re Hollywood, there has been a series of articles in recent years about Hollywood's interaction with Nazi government forces in the late 30's. The gist of those articles seemed to be that Hollywood's approach was influenced heavily by the fact that Germany was still a U.S. market for movies in the 30's. I.e., money buys perspective.

Your photos suggest that Germany as a whole is much more open about acknowledging past wrongs of any type than the U.S. would ever be. We are not big on acknowledgment here.

My sense is that this is not even across the country, that Berlin and only a few other cities stand out. I've photos from Nuremburg coming up eventually and it also seemed to be very strong in acknowledgement, but I didn't see as much in some other cities.
