Berlin, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (#2016)
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Though the "stelae" (concrete rectangles) don't have any particular relation to the number of Jews murdered during the Holocaust, just the site of the massive number of them was sobering. Like seeing an American military cemetery where the sameness of the grave markers reinforces both the number and the democracy of the means of death, the large number of very similar blocks suggests the mass of people who were killed simply for their faith and background. That's an excellent shot.

I'm carrying my own experiences to this, but it makes me think of the cemeteries in Louisiana.

When I see photos of this memorial, I imagine corpses stacked up inside each one. So, in that way, each one seems like a mass grave. A somber and beautiful composition, Don. Even the dark clouds fit the scene,
