SF Maritime Natl Hist Eureka ferry history(1431)

Eureka ferry at the historical park. It turns out to have quite a complex and interesting history, so I'm paraphrasing here from the Wikipedia entry. It is a side-wheel steamboat, built in 1890 and originally named Ukiah. It carried commuters (passengers, not cars or wagons) to Tiburon during the day and then railroad freight cars at night. During WWI it carried munition cars but the weight of them strained the hull so much that the ship was rebuilt from the waterline up as a passenger ferry and rechristened Eureka. From 1922 to 1941 it served as a commuter ferry between SF and Sausalito, carrying mostly passengers and few cars. During WWII it transported troops between Pittsburg (in the East Bay) and SF. After the war and until 1957, it transported rail cars from Oakland to SF until it went out of service. BUT, that's not it -- in the 1990's it was a main filming location for Nash Bridges (one of my favorite defective shows) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eureka_%28ferryboat%29
