Tehachapi Loop CA stall (1181)

Tehachapi Loop CA stall (1181)
Here it had come to a complete stop. A few minutes later I went down the hill and found that there were quite a few railfans out watching the train. One told me that the engineer on the train had radioed that the lead engine had overheated and they could go no futher.

Do the railfans have scanners that let them listen into railroad communications?

Back in my newspaper days, I once tried doing a story interviewing a bunch of guys who worked the midnight shift in a CSX transfer yard, but when I got out there the guys refused to do the interview. They said they didn't want to publicize that they were out there alone in the middle of the night, even though everybody in town knew they were there. Those guys would really be bothered by railfans tracking them with scanners.

It's definitely a type of snooping I'd be uncomfortable with.
