Whiteclay, NE (0251)
Whiteclay, Neb. Whiteclay's mainly known for being a town composed of liquor stores -- there are 4, but the town has less that 20 residents. Per Wikipedia, the town sold $3 million in liquor in 2012. The town is at the border with South Dakota, which is the southern border for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Driving through the town is a saddening sight due to the number of people on the street and hanging in front of the stores who look to be very down on their luck. Across the street to the left of me when I took this picture, there was a young male who appeared to have passed out in the grass.

I think the actual rates of alcoholism among Native Americans, while high, are much lower than that. You see high rates of alcohol use in any population (typically among the men) where they have nothing to do -- appears to be true here in Palm Springs as well.
