US 395 abandoned mill (0291)

US 395 abandoned mill (0291)
Like in much of the west, remote parts of US 395 appear to be going through untouched land, but a closer look usually reveals evidence of some activity from the past. Based on the foundations and the various structures and flat spaces, I'm guessing this was a small mill for ore collected from mines in the area.

One of the things I enjoy about the West is that the remnants of lost settlement remain, so you can still easily see places that used to be important to somebody. In the east, what doesn't vanish in the rain is swallowed by foliage. We had abandoned towns where I grew up in Kentucky, but you'd never be able to find them in the woods that grew over them.

I hadn't really thought about that, but maybe that's why I like the West. Raised in Florida, I'd hear all of these tales of what the area used to look like, but too many had either they rotted away or were paved over.
