Agave: Majestätische Blüte und abruptes Ende - Agave: Majestic flowering and abrupt end - 4 PiPs

At the moment, an agave (asparagus family) with an inflorescence more than five metres high is still in bloom in the Würzburg Botanical Garden (see PiP 1), which is extremely rare. Many people have been visiting the Botanical Garden for days because of this (see PiP 2).
Agaves, which belong to the asparagus family, take several decades to start flowering and then only do so once. The Würzburg agave in the photo is about 40 years old. In the photo and in PiP 3 you can see a partial inflorescence with long, large anthers hanging out of the individual flowers. In their native habitat, agaves are pollinated by certain bats that feed on the pollen and nectar of the large flowers.
"After flowering, the leaf rosette from which the inflorescence comes dies. The plant uses all the resources from the leaves to form such a large inflorescence," says Prof. Vogg, the director of the Botanic Garden. But don't worry: in the meantime, new offshoots have already formed again from the old rosette (see PiP 3), in other words: life goes on.
