Die Kamelhalsfliege: ein lebendes Fossil - The snake fly: a living fossil
Beide Fotos entstanden in meinem Garten.

The snake fly (Venustoraphia nigricollis) was the "Insect of the Year 2022" in Germany. The Senckenberg German Entomological Institute, chose the animal from a number of suggestions. Snake flies are today considered the least speciose order of insects with complete metamorphosis - i.e. with a pupal stage. However, it can be deduced from the many fossil finds that insects were represented in much greater diversity on earth during the lifetime of the dinosaurs. Fossils also show that they have existed for at least 200 million years and were once widespread all over the world.
In the photo a male Venustoraphia nigricollis, in the PiP a female, recognisable by its long laying spine. Both photos were taken in my garden. Never before have I noticed these little insects.
