On a hike I discovered a striking large butterfly, the scarce swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) sucking on a thistle flower next to the wayside. The scarce swallowtail is a rare butterfly that I have seen maybe five times in the last 20 years and is listed as endangered in Germany's Red List of Threatened Species. As the main photo, or even better the PiPs, show, the observed butterfly has only one "little tail" left, the other one has obviously been pecked away by a bird. This is because the scarce swallowtails pretend to have a false front end with their tail, on which there is a blue eye, which is readily attacked by birds. One tail less, but they have escaped with their lives. The scarce swallowtail caterpillar develops on crippled blackthorn bushes (eats their leaves), which have beeen removed in many areas, thus destroying the habitat. The species has stabilised again after the implementation of many conservation measures in Germany.
About the photo: The brown background colour came from the presence of a ripe grain field in the background.

cammino club has replied to ©UdoSm clubEigentlich kommt der Segelfalter schwerpunktmäßig mehr in Süddeutschland vor, allerdings nie in Form eines Massenvorkommens, sondern immer nur als Einzeltier. Daher wird er nur selten gesichtet.
Great info, glad the little beauty is hanging in there
