Elegante Flugkünstler - Elegant flying artists
Wenn man nur die ziemlich unansehnlichen Larven der Libellen kennt, die in Gewässern räuberisch leben, ist man doch ziemlich erstaunt, dass aus einer solchen Larve solch ein prächtiges Fluginsekt wie im Bild entsteht. Libellen gehören zu einer uralten Insektengruppe, welche schon seit 200 Millionen Jahren mit schnellem und wendigem Flug ihre Beute fangen. Vorder- und Hinterflügel können unabhängig voneinander bewegt werden, was präzise Flugbewegungen ermöglicht und große Facettenaugen mit großer zeitlicher Auflösung (200 Bilder/Sekunde!) ermöglichen einen äußerst erfolgreichen Beutefang.
Im Bild (und in den PiPs) das Männchen einer Plattbauchlibelle (Libellula depressa), das auf einer Warte auf Beute lauert. Bei Männchen ist der Hinterleib hellblau, bei Weibchen anfangs bräunlich mit gelben Flecken (hornissenähnlich!), später unauffällig braun.

If you only know the rather unsightly larvae of dragonflies that live predatorily in bodies of water, you are quite astonished that such a larva can develop into such a magnificent flying insect as in the picture. Dragonflies belong to an ancient group of insects that have been catching their prey with fast and agile flight for 200 million years. Forewings and hindwings can be moved independently of each other, allowing precise flight movements, and large compound eyes with great temporal resolution (200 frames/second!) enable extremely successful prey capture.
The photo (and in the PiPs) shows the male of a broad-bodied chaser (Libellula depressa) lying in wait for prey. In males the abdomen is light blue, in females initially brownish with yellow spots (hornet-like!), later inconspicuously brown.
