Volkstrauertag - National Day of Mourning

Der Volkstrauertag wird in Deutschland seit 1952 zwei Sonntage vor dem ersten Adventssonntag begangen und erinnert an die Kriegstoten und Opfer der Gewaltherrschaft aller Nationen.
Im Bild zu sehen ist eine große liegende Plastik beim Massengrab der 2965 Toten des Luftangriffs auf Würzburg am 16. März 1945. Es erinnert vor allem an tote Eltern und ihre Kinder. Das Mahnmal wurde 1953/54 vom Würzburger Bildhauers Fried Heuler gestaltet und zeigt symbolisch einen Mann, eine Frau und zwei Kinder überlebensgroß in Totenstarre. Die Plastik wurde aus (vulkanischem) Diabasstein gefertigt.

The National Day of Mourning ("Volkstrauertag") has been celebrated in Germany since 1952 two Sundays before the First Advent Sunday. It is to remind of the war victims and the victims of violent oppression of all nations.
In the picture you can see a large lying sculpture nearby the mass grave of the 2965 casualties of the air raid on Würzburg on 16 March 1945. The memorial symbolically shows a man, a woman and two children larger than life-size in their rigor mortis.
