Das Berliner Stadtschloss wurde 1442 als Residenzschloss der Hohenzollern erbaut und galt als ein Hauptwerk des norddeutschen Barock.
Im Jahr 1950 beschloss die Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands (SED), das im Zweiten Weltkrieg zum größten Teil ausgebrannte Gebäude vollständig zu beseitigen. Auf dem Gelände des Schlosses entstand ab 1973 der modernistische Palast der Republik, der nach der Wiedervereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten zwischen 2006 und 2009 abgerissen wurde.

Seit 12. Juni 2006 wird unter Verwendung rekonstruierter wesentlicher Fassaden- und Gebäudeteile des ehemaligen Berliner Stadtschlosses an ursprünglicher Stelle ein Neubau errichtet. Der Wiederaufbau der barocken Fassaden wird auch durch private Spendengelder finanziert. Nach dem Wiederaufbau des Berliner Stadtschlosses soll der Gebäudekomplex das künftige Humboldtforum beherbergen, dessen Eröffnung am 14. September 2019 geplant ist. Das Stadtschloss soll dann mit außereuropäischen Sammlungen und weiteren Ausstellungen sowie als Veranstaltungsort die Berliner Museumsinsel ergänzen.

The Berlin City Palace (German: Berliner Stadtschloss) was a royal and imperial palace in the centre of Berlin. It was the winter residence of the Kings of Prussia and the German Emperors.
The palace was originally built in the 15th century and changed throughout the next few centuries. It was regarded as a major work of the North German Baroque. The palace was heavily damaged by Allied bombing in World War II. Although it could have been repaired at great expense, the palace was demolished in 1950 by the German Democratic Republic authorities. On its place, the Palace of the Republic (German: Palast der Republik) was built.
Following the reunification of Germany, it was decided to rebuild the entire exterior of the palace in the original style. The new building will have the cubature of the former palace and includes authentically reconstructed facades on three of the four exterior sides of the building. The interior will be modern, but the facades of one of the courts will be in the original style. The building will house the Humboldtforum museum and congress complex, and is scheduled to be finished 14 September 2019.
