Greece, Kavala, The Cape of Panagia and Kamares Aqueduct

Greece, Kavala, The Cape of Panagia and Kamares Aqueduct
The Byzantine fortress of Kavala is located in the old town on the hill of Panagia. The fortress was built in the 9th century. In the first quarter of the 15th century it was rebuilt.

The Kamares Aqueduct is a three-tiered arched structure connecting the old and new quarters. It is a Byzantine monument, rebuilt in the 16th century by Sultan Suleiman I. The height of the aqueduct is 25 meters, the length is 280 meters, a total of 60 arches have been preserved. Kamares is located in the center of Kavala, on Nikosara Square, next to the Panagia area, the old market and the old city docks. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the aqueduct provided the city with water flowing from the springs of Mount Pangaea. In 1997, the structure was restored.
