Greece, Kavala, Byzantine Aqueduct of Kamares

Greece, Kavala, Byzantine Aqueduct of Kamares
The Kamares Aqueduct is a three-tiered arched structure connecting the old and new quarters. It is a Byzantine monument, rebuilt in the 16th century by Sultan Suleiman I. The height of the aqueduct is 25 meters, the length is 280 meters, a total of 60 arches have been preserved. Kamares is located in the center of Kavala, on Nikosara Square, next to the Panagia area, the old market and the old city docks. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the aqueduct provided the city with water flowing from the springs of Mount Pangaea. In 1997, the structure was restored.

Interessantes Bauwerk. Was hat man früher nicht alles getan, um frisches Wasser zu bekommen.
