Through The Rushes
The Eurasian Coot - Fulica atra - is a widespread (in GB) water bird of the Rail family and can be seen on lakes, ponds and rivers. Coots dive for their food, usually plant material, small invertebrates, fish and eggs, but unlike Ducks they will bring their catch to the surface before eating it. They are also known as Bald Coots and White-Faced Divers. The saying 'Bald as a Coot' refers to the white frontal shield rather than a lack of feathers. This one was seen at Carr Mill Dam, St Helens, Merseyside.
