Monk Parakeet (in the wild) – Myiopsitta monachus
The Monk Parakeet - Myiopsitta monachus - is also known as the Quaker Parrot and is original to south America and especially Argentina. They are, however, now seen in many countries around the world where, having been pets, they have been released into the wild and started to colonise. Although they look lovely they are considered pests in many areas as they compete with pigeons and other local species for food and issue irritating, shrill squawks. Their lifespan is 20-30 years. They are the only Parrot that builds nests in trees or man made structures rather than using a hole in a tree, these nests are communal and can be quite large containing many pairs. This one was seen whilst walking along the coastal footpath at Puerto Banus, Spain.
