Horse's chamfron or ceremonial face mask / covering.

The excavated remains, laid flat - it appears that most of the decoration had been removed ...
and above, a modern replica to show what it probably looked like.

note : A few weeks later, I discovered that in Corbridge (only a few miles away) the museum contains an example of the brass eye cover !
