East Lancs Champion

40 145 was an unusual sight for Macclesfield as it headed south early on saturday morning with the East Lancs Champion tour to Penzance.

Jubilee Mill

Jubilee Mill at New Hey has been derelict for a long time and there isn't much left these days. My eye was caught by the light from the holes in the roof falling on the grafitti in this section.

St Paul's Church, Strines

Anglican Services started at Strines (Calico) Print Works in 1854 and the owners of the Works built this church in 1880. The interior is timber lined and very attractive although the original pews have been replaced with chairs. At the far right it can be seen that the extra 'vestry' option was taken when the building was ordered.

Gone

Palin's bakery and shop on Park Lane has long been converted to other uses but the sign on the end wall served as a reminder of the days when there were so many local bakeries. Sadly, in early May the sign was hacked off and the wall re-rendered. Another bit of history gone. :-(

New Haden

13 May 2010 416
New Haden Colliery was acquired by John Slater in 1917 and became part of his Berry Hill group in 1922. A brickworks was opened at New Haden to use clay worked from measures adjacent to the Little Dilhorne seam at the colliery. It was still operating in 1947 although the colliery had closed in 1943. I suspect that by then the works was using pit shale from the tips as a raw material. Information from Mr J P Cartlidge via Ken Perkins.

Welbeck Colliery closes

05 Jun 2008 437
www.chad.co.uk/news/Welbeck-Colliery-to-close-next.627172... It is the end of an era at Welbeck Colliery as the pit prepares to cease production next Tuesday after almost a century. UK Coal has announced the colliery, at Meden Vale, will be closed on 11th May when the last coal face there reaches the end of its life, after being open since 1912. The colliery had 1,400 working men at its peak but this figure has now fallen to 410 – all of whom were offered jobs in other parts of the company. Around 170 workers have finished working at the colliery so far, with just 57 taking voluntary redundancy. And about 70 men will remain working there for the next three months to recover face equipment worth around £6m, some of which will be transferred to neighbouring Thoresby Colliery, then the pit will be decommissioned. UK Coal spokesman Stuart Oliver said: "Most of the site is owned by Welbeck Estates and there are on-going discussions involving Welbeck Estates, UK Coal, the local authority and other job-creation agencies to determine what the best future use of the site should be to create jobs for the future." The first shaft for the pit was sunk between 1912-15 at a depth of 660m and it became one of the first million-tonne-a-year superpits. Mr Oliver said the colliery shared the same seam of coal with Thoresby Colliery, the deep soft seam, but it is separated by a geological fault, so the company decided to continue mining it from the Thoresby side. He said: "When the decision to close it was taken about three years ago, it had a limited future, for the coal reserves on this side of the geological fault." The coal face at Welbeck is 300m long and is now reaching the end of its life, while Thoresby Colliery has had a £55m investment made to open up new reserves there, which will keep it open for at least another decade.

I think that the view of Caphouse Colliery from the roadside has plenty of atmosphere, particularly when it is wet and gloomy like here.

Glazed bricks

What do you do with the flawed or faulty glazed bricks? Use them to build the walls of the buildings in your brickworks. A nice selection of colours in these walls at the Halifax Glazed Brick Works that was once operated by Allen & Son (Halifax) Limited.

Cast plate and frame on side of earth closets at Hipperholme, West Yorkshire. This is clearly not in its original context. My guess is that this, and the one seen in the next image, were plates designed to be opened to facilitate removal of the night soil bucket at the back of the closets. I think it was designed to be slid up and out.

Clones roundhouse

28 Jun 2008 467
At the back of the former Great Northern Railway of Ireland twelve road locomotive shed at Clones in County Monaghan. Built in 1925 it closed with then railway in 1959 and the premises were subsequently modified and used by a company that constructed tank containers. Around 2003 this business got into financial difficulties and the works has since been used for steel fabrication although that appears to have come to an end in the loco shed building. At the back of the roundhouse the steel fabrication work was extended into this corrugated lean-to structure. The pipework is for extraction from the bays that were used for paint spraying and shotblasting.
