The Shap Beck Quarry received a new plant in 1999 and since 2009 supplies around 650,000 tonnes of crushed kiln feed limestone from Shap Beck to Shap Fell processing plant nearby (Tata steel) and used in the large scale production of lime for steelmaking. The quarry also supplies around 300,000 to local and regional markets and has an on-site plant for making asphalt for road surfacing. There are 21 people employed directly and the quarry supports a further 30 jobs for drivers and contractors. The site extends to 118 hectares and is operated by the Hanson Aggregates division of the Heidelberg group.
Middlewood nights

The late evening train for Buxton had just one passenger arriving at the lonely Middlewood station on the branch from Stockport. I think I was pushing the limits of the mobile phone camera for this one.
Corder House

Corder House at 21 Fawcett Street, Sunderland was built as a cafe and offices between 1889 and 1891. The architect was Frank Caws and the contractors David and John Rankin. The terracotta, as clearly marked, is by J C Edwards of Ruabon. Frank Caws had his own office in these buildings. It is listed Grade II.
Grain

Grain silos at Broken Hill in New South Wales. The grain must be brought from quite a distance as Broken Hill sits in the midst of semi-desert outback and I saw no sign of cultivation.
Miners' memorial

This morning I took a stroll up the hill to the Staffordshire Miners' memorial at Apedale. The wheel came from Annesley Colliery in Nottinghamshire.

Welcome to Sutton Coldfield. The rear of the Gracechurch shopping centre presents a barren windswept vista with its concrete panelled car park above the acres of unrelieved brickwork. All I wanted to do was get back to the station at the top of the road.
