Setting the standards for safety

Setting the standards for safety
Deep coal mining ends in Britain tomorrow when Kellingley Colliery closes. I find it hard to grasp the enormity of this event and certainly never expected to see this happen in my lifetime. A deeply sad and depressing moment.

A peek at the back entrance to the pit.

Kellingley Colliery, setting the standards for safety, but not for signage. :)

I half caught something on the radio here that a Welsh coalmine has recently reopened to supply coking coal to new steel plant. Do you have any more info?

I can't find anything to confirm this. There is always talk of possible reopenings but with the current low price of coal this is highly unlikely. The anthracite mine at Aberpergwm was mothballed during the summer.

I remembering hearing recently that coal mines in the UK were shutting. Though we in the U.S. are working at ending coal-fired generation and at closing some coal mines in the east, coal mining (all open-pit, I think) is roaring in the western states.

I grieve for the kids I taught in the 80s in Knottingley (just down the road from Big K) who became men who worked at the pits and power station in the area. And more importantly, for their children who no can no longer find industrial work.
