For me, it was the way the rails diverged for the passing place, and then came back together in such a symmetrical pattern, then set it off in the woods...!!!

You are exactly right, one cable. The approaching car will go to my right, and my car to the left. The rack in the middle is for the brakes if the cable breaks!

In reality, it didn't seem that steep, the emergency stairs are quite gentle.. But it was the pattern of the converge - diverge which drew my attention, just like yours!
