I'v added a couple of other links above which show the same place. Since the canal is higher than the river at this point, and overspill will go under the bridge at the extreme left, over a wier, and fall into the river. Since the house is still there, I reckon the system works!!

This area used to be very industrial, hence the need for the canal, and later the railway.
Now the industry has gone, the railway is hardly used, and the canal is only for leisure...

Thank you so much for a very enthusiastic visit! You have seen the walk to the pub in the hyperlinked picture, now this is the walk from the pub!! (There is no road access, everything must use the footpath on the left side of the picture).
I don't know the origins of the house, but there are plenty of abandoned industrial sites in the area, so maybe the overseer's house?

So gorgeous!! That darling white house with dark brown trim is just gorgeous, and the reflection in the river is wonderful. Super composition and angle, I only wish I could actually be standing there right now. :)

The water is actually a canal at this point, but rather full of water due to recent heavy rains. It is however flowing like a river to carry off the excess over the spillway! As I said to Rosa, and others above, I don't know the history of the house, but it must date back a couple of hundred years or so to the time when the local industry was flourishing.

Hence of course the reason for the 'Black Lion' pub, which is directly behind me in this shot.
