The mountain narrow gauge railways of Wengen, Switzerland c1984

The mountain narrow gauge railways of Wengen, Switzerland c1984
Here is a selection of the trains running on those mountains at that time, now long superceded.

The Wengernalp Railway (WAB) is a 19.11 kilometres long, rack railway line in Switzerland. It runs from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg at 2,061 metres above sea level, making it the world's longest continuous rack and pinion railway. The name refers to the seasonal mountain pastures above Wengen. It has a track gauge of 800mm (2'7", UK=1435mm)

Originals on 35mm slide. Nice full screen.

Good morning Rosa. Well here are some more of my photo archives from the days I went skiing in that wonderful traffic-free Alpine village of Wengen near Gridelwald and Interlaken. A glimpse here of the only means of transport -the mountain trains. To get around at all, one needed really, a ticket for the duration of your trip and that meant you could chundle around on these trains, all over the place, up and down the mountains here, to your hearts content. - A blast-from-the-past for sure. Glad you liked them and as you say, much better seen a little bigger..

Hope you are staying safe and occupied in these days of self-Isolation. Herb

My pleasure to bring back such memories Toz. We did a bit of walking in the snow but nothing, I am sure like yours. I did do a lot of exploring on these trains and on the ski piste though skiing down into Grindelwald and also from the top of Mürren - Schilthorn. Once viseted Gridelwald in the Summer too -my first time in Switzerland so 50 years ago now.

Keep safe too. Herb

A marvellous collage, Herb. Some great images and interesting background information. The old slides have lasted and scanned well.

Thanks George. In reality, just an excuse to give an airing to some dusty slides that never had hopes of such fame :) Some of the slides converted fine, others not so but it always gicves me a chance to relive these long gone holidays.
Keep well on this Easter day. Herb

Another that knows this area like Toz and Colin above. I hope this brought back pleasant memories. I have been to the area four times in all, the first time, like you in summer but only as a day trip to Gridelwald and Lauterbrunnen from the Lucern area. I was hooked after that! The other three trips -all ski trips.

Enjoy the rest of Easter and keep safe. Herb

1984 doesn't seem that long ago ... well, until I start calculating ;-)
Glad you got to see and capture a bit of "old" Switzerland.

Haha, yes, I thought the same as you Sarah. Frightening isn't it! - Yes the web shows this area and its trains as being quite different -but the mountains persist -thankfully.

Enjoy your Easter and keep safe. Herb
