Artist at work ?

Artist at work ?
In these days of lock-down and self-isolation for us ‘owd-uns’ (old-ones), sometimes we have to find other things to do besides taking and editing photos. Here is yours-truly messing around on his latest unfinished 'masterpiece' at his very amateur water painting hobby. And, don’t worry, I am not always as untidy as this –I am afraid the photography got in the way here :)

Maybe we should start a new Ipernity group named –‘Our other hobbies’

Nouchetdu38, , Holger Hagen, Simon Downham and 21 other people have particularly liked this photo

WOWWWWW, you are very talented, Herb !!! I also used to paint (see my album), but with my back I cannot stand the position too long and .... I also have a lack of inspiration at present time !

Thanks so much Marie-clare. You honour me with this. I have taken a quick peek at your very own 'paintings' album and I see you are a professional in all that ! I know what you mean about painting, taking its tole on your back. I have the same trouble after some time. I just try a painting or two now and again when I am inspired too.

Best wishes and keep safe. Herb

On the contrary looks quiet tidy to me for a gents work station (Care to see my computer desk)!!
Are you working from a photograph or just memory.
Herb Riddle club has replied to HappySnapper
Haha, well I got o admit that I can be far less tidy than this too. This is just a make-shift studio (a table that is) in a corner of the spare well lit room. My computer desk goes from extremly tidy to a right-mess -depending...

I copied this scene from a favourite water-colour tutorial book I have by Mathew Palmer. I have never tried a full painting from memory or even 'live' in the field but I have done 'live' sketches.

Cheers for the call -take extra care. Herb

Great work, Herb. I did a lot of different things in the time, but after internet nothing more.

In that way Daniela, the internet has a lot to be blamed for. A pity really. You should re-try your old hobbies too. Glad you enjoyed this impromptu photo.

Take care. Herb

I should have guessed that you would be as good at painting landscapes as you are at photographing them Herb..............and typically, you've managed to take a cracking shot of yourself proving it as well..!! I wish I had the skills to do something like that but sadly I don't - which is one of the reasons I took up photography.

It's always interesting to get to know a little more about the lives of our contacts, we are a community after all. I love this photo!

Ah Keith, you honour me again with such lines. I have always loved the countryside and like to take some home with me. Photography, reading and a bit of painting & sketching allows me to do that a little. Keith, I only started painting and drawing a couple of years back -completely self taught from books and you-tube. Very amateurish but satisfying too. Most of my past life, I would have been astounded at seeing these (and some really are better) by me. Like dancing, I have been proved to have Not two left feet with art I can actually hold a brush. Give it a try -you may well be surprised too.

As you say -it is sometimes nice to see the person behind the photos -here you see a bit of the real me too. - I like your Micheal J Fox quote!

It looks very nice Herb. I hope you show it finished to us. I cannot paint watercolour, so I admire this greatly. I went to classes but ended up doing oils...you can make more mistakes and correct them ;-)) My teacher's husband was James Lynch & after seeing his paintings, I nearly gave up!! A great talent you have. All the best, Rosa.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Thanks Rosa -perhaps one day I shall go to classes too. I have never tried oils but I do have an un-opened set of acrylic paints that I shall try some day. My many thanks too for the compliment re my painting here. I did think that you too had a painting or two in your albums but a quick search today failed me. If not -perhaps you should share with one of yours too.

Keep well. Herb

I think it was supposed to be the Lakes Toz but I got excited with my hills :) I got to say that I think I am better with the camera than the brush. In fact, I used to say "I took up photography because I could not paint nor draw". That might still be said :)

Great that you can spend the time in lock down. I always said painting is a natural extension of photography this just goes to prove it. Each one makes the other better as you improve and understand more. Hardest is water colour wash like this I preferred oils. Keep it up we’ll worth doing. Keep safe .

Herb Riddle club has replied to Steve Paxton club
Yes the two go hand in hand Steve. I know too, that you have talents in this direction. I do like to work with the soft pastels of water-colour but might try oils one day. As you say the more I practice the better I should get, with both painting and photography :)

Cheers and keep safe. Herb

I wish I could paint as well as you do! Funny enough I had all sorts of lockdown plans and didn't really get around to any of them;-)

Herb Riddle club has replied to Gudrun club
Thanks so much for that nice compliment Gudrun. I still have more lock-down plans that I now know will never get accomplished too. Painting and sketching like this seems a natural extension to our photo taking hobby.

You're clearly a dab hand with that watercolour brush, Herb. That's very impressive, maybe you might care to share some of your others here. I used to smear oils around a little (many years ago). Now my home office desk is much less tidy than your workspace here.
Herb Riddle club has replied to tiabunna club
You are too kind George. Not a dab hand but sometimes I get lucky. I have done about two dozen water colours to date (over about three years) and as this one proved to me, not always an improvement :) i must try to spread some oils or at least acrylics about sometime in the future. Maybe I shall share another painting in due course :) My computer office desk varies from ultra tidy to ridiculously untidy cluttered but it all works for me.

Cheers and keep good over there in Aus. Herb
