Penon d'Alfach, up close.

Penon d'Alfach, up close.
This beautiful and massive limestone outcrop is a real treat when looking at it over the sea from a distance but up close as here in Calp it shows its real beauty. It climbs to 332 metres asl which at 1086ft is approx the same height and steepness here as The North face of Eiger!

Hi nick -somehow I had lost the height figures on here -corrected now. It was relatively easy to climb up but not via this face. A well trod path zigged-zagged up the other side and nearly to its peak via a tunnel cut through the stone. I believe the last few hundred feet are a bit of a rock scramble. We walked up to the tunnel (and I, through it) which is about half way up -great views of the town from there. Cheers, Herb

Hi Herb,

Again, superb picture, and I guess compared to the Eiger, the absence of snow makes it look more attractive!
In a way it reminds me of Cnicht, steep on the front side, easy round the back.

Best Wishes, and a Good Weekend!

Good to see you again Peter. Yes a much warmer mountain than the Eiger altogether (which I have also photographed too). In truth this face was not a thousand feet, or it would have crawling with climbers, but the rock itself is. It extends somewhat other than what we can see here. I had to look up the Cnicht (described as the Welsh Matterhorn). I imagine you are correct.
