Complesso di Sant'Agostino

Il complesso monastico di Sant'Agostino si sviluppa sullo sperone roccioso situato all'estremità settentrionale dei Sassi; da questa posizione si pone come baluardo e limite dello sviluppo urbano del Sasso Barisano.
Il nucleo originario risale al X-XI secolo e si sviluppa al di sotto dell'attuale struttura; è composto da una serie di locali ipogei tra cui una cripta dedicata a San Guglielmo che collega questi ambienti con la chiesa moderna.

I lavori per la realizzazione del complesso monastico ebbero inizio nel 1591, su iniziativa dei monaci agostiniani, con la costruzione della chiesa che aveva dimensioni ridotte rispetto all'attuale; intorno alla seconda metà del XVII secolo, il complesso fu terminato: presentava una struttura di tipo conventuale, ad impianto quadrangolare con un chiostro centrale. Restaurato dopo il rovinoso terremoto del 1734, dal XIX secolo in poi, in seguito alle leggi eversive napoleoniche e al processo di Unità Nazionale, ha subito sorti alterne assumendo funzioni diverse da quelle religiose, fino all'attuale come sede degli uffici del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali.

Restored after the disastrous earthquake of 1734, from the nineteenth century onwards, following the subversive laws of Napoleon and the process of National Unity, it has undergone changes taking on different functions from the religious ones, up to the present as the headquarters of the offices of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities.
