SC72 post 19 November - Shabby Chic I used to collect blue and white plates, mainly from junk stores, and this is what remains of the collection. One of the first collected is the one with a touch of yellow in it. It came from a pub junk room about 50+ years ago. The small plate just above it to the right is the most recent, and was bought in Amsterdam about 20 years ago. I keep thinking of taking them to a charity shop, but then I'd have a bare patch of wall. ;-)

The first "hall" or meeting place for the Guild is not known, but in 1485 a new guildhall was built close to St Mary's Church and the almshouses, at a cost of £9-15s-6d. Almost a century later, in 1576, the heyday of the Drapers' prosperity, the present hall was built on the same site in the old commercial centre of the town.

I think theses chairs are made from a product called jesmonite.

SC71 - one word This effect is created on the ceiling of one of our rooms, when sunlight shines brightly through crystals hanging in the window. The effect is particularly strong when the sun is low in the sky, during autumn, winter and spring. Another attempt is 'doors' taken in our local town of Shrewsbury.

Chester city walls consist of a defensive structure built to protect the city. The fortress was initially defended by an earth rampart surmounted by a wooden palisade and surrounded by a ditch. From about 90 AD Chester was occupied by Legio XX Valeria Victrix, who started a programme of rebuilding, including the improvement of the walls. Starting in about 100 AD the earth walls were reconstructed using sandstone. Following the Norman conquest the army of William the Conqueror arrived in Chester in 1069–70, and the king ordered that a castle should be built. This was constructed outside the site of the Roman fortress, to the southwest in an elevated position overlooking the River Dee. This necessitated the extension of the walls to the west and south to incorporate the castle, leading to the circuit of the walls currently present. The walls are now a major tourist attraction, and form an almost complete circuit of the former medieval city, with a total walkway length of 2.95 kilometres (1.8 mi). Upkeep and repair of the walls continues to be a problem. It's a pity that one gets the view of a large car park here. C70 - What makes you smile? The sheer joy of wild swimming in the sea. I laughed with this pair of women - not without a touch of envy at their carefree and uninhibited joy, I might add.

hFF Everyone, and stay safe and dry if possible. Did you know - the Eastgate Clock is the second most photographed clock in the UK? And can you guess which is the first most photographed clock in the UK? Installed in 1899, the Eastgate Clock is positioned on the bridge over Eastgate Street in the city of Chester, the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The whole structure of the public clock and gateway, as one, is classified as a Grade I listed building. Although the original gate was Roman, the present gate was built in Georgian times to allow coaches through. However, the clock wasn’t added until the Victorian era to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.
