HWW from Chester

Chester city walls consist of a defensive structure built to protect the city. The fortress was initially defended by an earth rampart surmounted by a wooden palisade and surrounded by a ditch. From about 90 AD Chester was occupied by Legio XX Valeria Victrix, who started a programme of rebuilding, including the improvement of the walls. Starting in about 100 AD the earth walls were reconstructed using sandstone. Following the Norman conquest the army of William the Conqueror arrived in Chester in 1069–70, and the king ordered that a castle should be built. This was constructed outside the site of the Roman fortress, to the southwest in an elevated position overlooking the River Dee. This necessitated the extension of the walls to the west and south to incorporate the castle, leading to the circuit of the walls currently present. The walls are now a major tourist attraction, and form an almost complete circuit of the former medieval city, with a total walkway length of 2.95 kilometres (1.8 mi). Upkeep and repair of the walls continues to be a problem. It's a pity that one gets the view of a large car park here. Through the arch there is a set of steps to get the city walls over a major road. For more information see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester_city_walls#References

Lower largo fun in the sea

Enjoying the waves at Lower Largo

C70 - What makes you smile? The sheer joy of wild swimming in the sea. I laughed with this pair of women - not without a touch of envy at their carefree and uninhibited joy, I might add.

The Eastgate Clock, Chester

hFF Everyone, and stay safe and dry if possible. Did you know - the Eastgate Clock is the second most photographed clock in the UK? And can you guess which is the first most photographed clock in the UK? Installed in 1899, the Eastgate Clock is positioned on the bridge over Eastgate Street in the city of Chester, the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The whole structure of the public clock and gateway, as one, is classified as a Grade I listed building. Although the original gate was Roman, the present gate was built in Georgian times to allow coaches through. However, the clock wasn’t added until the Victorian era to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.

SC69 – Seasons The photos of fungi were taken at Attingham Park, and the flower photos were taken in our garden. At one point there were 4 Red Admirals basking in the warm autumn sunshine in the garden. By the time I got the camera only 2 remained on the dahlias. The seasons are getting mixed up because of climate change I think.

This fence can be found next to Phoenix Tower that stands at the northeast corner of the city walls in Chester, England. The tower is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It has also been known as Newton Tower and King Charles' Tower. The structure probably originated in the 13th century.

We often go walking up this area, The Cliffe. It is a sandstone hill running from our village to Nesscliffe, and affords great views across the Shropshire countryside over to the Welsh foothills. There are quite a few benches along the way, allowing the less fit of us to have a rest during the climb.

The quiet gardener

SC68 – Post October 22 - Tools None of my garden tools is electrically or petrol powered. Here one can see a long handled pruning saw, an extendable lopper, a hoe, a lawn edger (which was my father's), a lawn rake, a garden fork, flat lawn trimmers, lady's hedge cutters, lawn edging shears, a garden spade and the pair of handles belong to push mower. I might have to invest in a battery operated lawn mower next year as I'm getting a bit long in the tooth and the push mower is heavy.

Scotties by the sea

Meet 'Hoolie Hound,' the vibrant sculpture that's ready to take you on a whirlwind artistic journey along our Scotties By The Sea trail. Crafted by the talented artist Rio Moore. Decorated by local artists and communities, more than 30 giant Scottie sculptures have appeared across St Andrews & The Northeast Fife Coast. The Scotties are designed to celebrate the communities, culture, and creativity of Northeast Fife, whilst also raising money for Maggie’s Everyone’s Home of Cancer Care – working locally and nationally providing free cancer support and information in centres across the UK and online, and connecting St Andrews all the way down the East Neuk of Fife. The art trail was opened on the 1st of September, and has collected sponsorship money already. The Scotties will be sold to raise more money for the charity. There are smaller Scotties positioned in shops. I only took 3 photos of them, not wanting to spend valuable time in my home town and in The Kingdom searching for dogs. ;-)))
