Whitby full moon

Whitby full moon
Fifty years ago today, US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans in history to set foot on the Moon, an event watched on television by half a billion people.

Their lunar module, named "Eagle," touched down at 4.18pm ET on 20 July 1969.

Armstrong said later that what he meant to say was, "One small step for _a_ man, one giant leap for mankind!" But what's gone down in history is what he actually said.

I saw the movie "The Dish," on the ground receiver in Australia that captured the transmissions. A part of the story I'd never heard, and I don't _think_ there was too much poetic license.

Just a little poetic licence, Steve. The first 8 minutes was actually received at NASA's (now closed) Honeysuckle Creek tracking station near Canberra, as Parkes could not dip low enough.
