Happisburgh coastal erosion

Happisburgh coastal erosion
The village of Happisburgh in Norfolk is being consumed by coastal erosion. The coastline on which the village sits is being eroded by the sea at a rate of 12 metres per year. I have been visiting this area for the past 3 years, and have seen this rapid deterioration with my own eyes. Buildings have toppled down the cliffs, and caravan sites have had to be moved. A new car park has had to be constructed - the last one is no longer there. The sea is relentless, and the cliffs are very fragile. On the day this photo was taken, the sea was quiet, but storms last winter caused much devastation.

That's very nice, Amelia, a bit scary, tough. Is the sea eating the coast?

Yes - the sea is 'eating' the coast, Dany, at the rate of 12 metres per year! It is a bit scary to think that the village church is about 20 years away from the edge.

It's fascinating and scary. I've never been to the Norfolk coast, only further north in Yorkshire but there the cliffs are crumbling too- sandstone or limestone are no match for the sea. Cheers, Gudrun

A tiny corner of land and such a lot of sea! Your picture makes the point, very well.

A gripping image, matching well with your description of the erosion. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the UK is tilting, with the west coast rising and the east subsiding.

Thank you all for your lovely compliments. Tiabunna, I think that the general opinion is that the North is rising while the South is sinking. Norfolk is one of the areas of falling land and rising sea levels - possibly.

Interesting to see this photo and read your comments. As a child I went to Happisburgh for a couple of summer holidays. The house we rented has now long gone, fallen into the sea and washed away.
