8.2 Landing page 'Explore' - Refresh 2023

This relates to the page where a new visitor will 'Land' after clicking the 'Explore' button on the ipernity homepage that has the slide show, see here.

The purpose of our landing page

Our landing page is aimed at visitors from the internet, to whom it should give an orientation about ipernity. It is also intended to arouse curiosity so that visitors go deeper into our website.

A landing page is good if it works! This is measured by how long visitors stay on the page (time on site) and how many visitors click on from there (bounce rate). It is not important whether we like the landing page ourselves. What is important is that it achieves the stated goals.

So, a landing page is an advertising instrument. It is not a showcase for our own photos. (For that we have the Gallery, the Ambassador pictures and our Groups). The visual elements (illustrations, photos) must rather be chosen in such a way that they achieve the following effects:

- attention
- attraction
- action (click on)

Attention is always achieved when visual elements are either particularly creative, humorous or confrontational. However, caution is needed with the latter, so we should limit ourselves to the attributes creative or humorous.

Attraction is aroused by the texts. They must convey the benefit to the visitor. Visual elements and texts must be hamonized in such a way that they create an overall attraction and anticipation. Only then is a visitor likely to click deeper into our website. When this action happens, our landing page has done its job.

Requirements for the top picture

The top picture is the eye-catcher on our homepage. It illustrates the statement: What you get.

And what do people get? The membership in a virtual community. The picture is meant to transport the virtual into the real. It shall be the actual social proof that real people meet and move in our virtual space, called ipernity.

Creative or humorous pictures with real people are therefore suitable. These should make contact with the viewer. After all, people are more likely to feel invited if they are looked at. The shown people should be younger than we are. There are two reasons for this: First, almost all of us have the internal self-image that we are not yet as old as we appear from the outside. Secondly, the younger ones are, as everywhere, our future.

Obviously the top picture should have something to do with photography. A good motif would therefore be photographers in action, for which there are thousands of creative or humorous renderings.

Of course, completely different motifs are also conceivable if they fulfil the goals we want to achieve. We do not want to exclude any creative idea from the outset. Therefore, you can also upload stock photos that can be used as an idea for a later shooting, by yourself or by others. Please remember to link the source in such cases.

It is always helpful and possibly also inspiring to find out what the current trends are and what the competitors are doing

Flickr has a homepage in the traditional style. It is dominated by a format-filling, high-quality photo:
FireShot Pro Screen Capture #1015 - 'Lass dich inspirieren. I Flickr' - www.flickr.com

One is looking in vain for a landing page where one can inform oneself about the website. A group on this topic is ancient and without any content:

500px had a similar website to Flickr until some time ago. It has since been converted into a real landing page:

Fotocommunity also relies on modern web design with illustrations mixed with photos.

Photobucket applies the current trend towards illustrations most consistently. Photobucket also focuses on smartphone users.

So, as described in this article, other photo sharing websites are mostly following the trend of using illustrations on their landing pages. We had also already considered this in 2020:

Landing Page (sketch 2)

One could now re-consider whether it would also be the time for us to use the more contemporary illustrations instead of photos.

First - I would be put off by having illustration instead of a photograph. We are a club, not a business and I always find illustration to be distancing - I would want an image that makes me feel at home.
---------------------------
Second - I consider the photo on the Landing Page to be something that should encourage someone to read the words on the page. Someone has already been drawn in to click on our first link on the Front page. The wonderful photos that Bernhard and helpers curate for that Front page are all wonderful eye catchers.

I would like ideas on what type of photo would encourage someone to at least read the bullet points below the first image. Those words, which were very carefully chosed, should then be the thing that encourages someone to explore further.

I consider that the lower 3 images do encourage someone to read the words. I find the top photo to draw too much attention to itself, it's too eye catching. I am not drawn to read what it below as I keep focusing back on the face of the woman. The lower images are well done and fit the topics they represent, but aren't so intriguing that they keep me from reading the words they are associated with.

So that is why I think we should find something quality that is actually less eye catching, while still being engaging. Basically, I think we have room for more variety.
----------------------
And a quick note to some who have suggested perhaps a group of photographers around a center theme - while I personally am not opposed to the idea, we should remember that if someone scrolls down the page one sees a collage of member's faces and we would want the top image to not be too close to that one.

I have created a short list of associations in the picture collection group that I think the picture should evoke. This list is not complete, but it is necessary. Otherwise we won't have any idea what we are actually looking for.

We have added a sentence to the opening post to hopefully clarify the difference between what we call the Landing page, and the ipernity Homepage.

So, the photos in this group www.ipernity.com/group/2760832 are not for the ipernity Homepage, which still require space for the logo. Find the Homepage proposal group here: www.ipernity.com/group/2341904
