What do the lights of the Empire State Building mean?

What do the lights of the Empire State Building mean? By Remy Melina The Empire State Building is perhaps the most recognizable skyscraper in New York City. Now, you may face some competition: A proposed 67-story building would be built just a few blocks away. Whatever the outcome of the contested proposal, the Empire State Building will remain unique in its long history, and also in its symbolic lighting displays. The top of the building has been lit in virtually every color and color scheme imaginable since the colors for the building were introduced in 1976. The first light to adorn the top of the Empire State Building was a white reflector headlamp, which was lit in November 1932 to celebrate Franklin D. Roosevelt winning the presidential election. This was updated to four rotating beacons, called "Lights of Freedom", in 1956.
