Karl IV. lebte von 1316 bis 1378. 1355 wurde er in Rom zum Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches gekrönt. Prag war seine Residenzstadt. 1356 erließ er die Goldene Bulle, das wichtigste Grundgesetz des Reichs.

Eigentlich hieß er Johannes Welflin von Pomuk (Nepomuk). Er wurde 1393 von der Karlsbrücke in der Moldau ertränkt. Etwa 150 m vom Karlsdenkmal entfernt steht auf der Karlsbrücke eine Statue von Nepomuk.
