Walking in autumn in the village of Shimshal at 3800meters in the Pamirs, near the Chinese border in Pakistan. This isolated valley is surrounded by 7000m peaks. In winter here it is -40C and frequented by bears, wolves and snow leopards. Wishing you a happy Friday and a cheerful and positive weekend.

The Mullah

Or Islamic leader. In Baltistan, on the difficult route out to K2 in the high mountains. We were not allowed into the 16th century wooden mosque, as non Muslims, but the mullah was ok with me taking his photo. A very conservative area of Pakistan. I have been very busy with music of late…sorry not to be on Ipernity so much! Have a super Sunday

Chitral, Pakistan. At the polo match. I was the only woman in quite a big crowd in this more conservative area of Pakistan, out towards the Khyber Pass. The men were exceeding hospitable and polite, invited me to sit on a large soft puffy VIP sofa to watch the match, and asked me to throw the ball in to start play. There were lots of very interesting characters about! Have a wonderful weekend. Cheers, Diana

The guardians

HFF from a very remote high altitude village in North Pakistan. The ‘fence’ is one side of a long vehicle suspension bridge across the high up headwaters of the young Indus River. The bridge has seen better days. These local villagers take turns to bang down the nails along the bridge bed every time a vehicle crosses. I see them as the gatekeepers of the village! May your Friday be fine and cheerful, and your weekend filled with things which make you very happy.

Walking above the mountain village of Gulmit through the orchards and farm fields. The backdrop is the spectacular Passu Cathedrals with their 6-7000 meter spires. I hope you have a very pleasant Friday. Thank you for your visit. Most appreciated. May your weekend be a very happy and positive one.

This is one of the vehicle suspension bridges on the 4WD track into Shimshal in very far north Pakistan. Our destination is in the mountains ahead through steep river gorges. The track from the end of the bridge clatters through loose stones into some sort of road. I do like adventure! Have a stonkingly Good Friday and a wonderful weekend. Love from Summer in Australia

The extraordinary tractors of Pakistan

It is not only the trucks of Pakistan which are objects of elaborate decorative arts. Vans, pickups and especially tractors are presented as amazing clanking, tinkling, flashing and dazzling tributes to their painting and metalworking artisans. They are objects of huge pride to their owners.

The village of Shimshal at 3,800 meters in the Pamir Mountains of North Pakistan. In this very remote subsistence farming community animals like this yak, and other livestock, are shut in pens at night to avoid predation by snow leopards - which is quite common, or wolves. This was 2C as the sun was going down on an autumn afternoon. Animal home time. Also note…everything is of stone….this is very harsh terrain. Have a safe and enjoyable opening of this New Year of 2023. Let’s hope it brings peace to Ukraine, and a bit more justice and equality to our planet. And on a personal level..wishing you all the things which you value most dearly.

Peace and Christmas wishes to all

Near Passu in Gojal, far North Pakistan, where a rail/ fence on LHS is a safely feature. The 7000m Passu Cathedrals form a dramatic backdrop over the Hunza River valley in this breathtakingly beautiful area. Have a fab Friday and a safe and happy weekend.

In the high Pamirs

On the Karakoram Highway in Pakistan ascending to the 4700 meter Khunjerav Pass, the high altitude border with China. The Karakoram Highway is a legendary feat of engineering hacked out of the world’s highest mountains by the Chinese and Pakistanis. Many died in its construction across the roof of the world and it is a real adventure journey along it.

Kalash children, Kafiristan. Pakistan.

The Kalash are an Indo-Ayrian minority group in Pakistan, living in remote valleys adjacent to the Pakistan border. As non Muslims they come under pressure from extremists who feel these women should be in hijabs and be subservient. They are, in the contrary, confident, boldly dressed in their traditional clothes, and educated. Education is very highly valued. This is a school. Kids have UNICEF bags. The back view of the girls in their daily headgear coming off the field from a game of cricket in school PE lesson. The picture at the bottom is an imposter ( me) at a village ceremony with local friends.
